LIE (to be in a horizontal position):  Lie is followed by an adverb (how, when, where or how much):

Present                :  She lies down
Past                   :  She lay down
Past Perfect           :  She had lain down

LAY (to place or put) :  Lay takes a direct object (a brick, a rug, a book, etc.)

Present                :  She lays it (a rug) down
Past                   :  She laid it (a brick) down
Past Perfect           :  She had laid it (a book) down

Easy!
